Our History
The Frontenac Bakery was established in 1904 by Goerge Vacca, an Italian Immigrant. Priort to coming to Frontenac, Vacca was a baker in northern Italy. He migrated to southeast Kansas to work for the coal mine. After injuring his knee in a mining accident, George went back to baking. George brought his family recipe for hard-crust Italian bread with him which is still in use today.
George operated the bakery until 1944. There have been seven owners since and the purchase of another local establishment called the Arma Bakery. The Frontenac Bakery provides 500 to 700 loaves of break per week to customers including the famous Southeast Kansas fried chicken eateries. Along with the French and Hard-Crust Italian breads the bakery bakes breadsticks, bread crumbs, dinner rolls, stuffing, and cinammon rolls.
